Welcome Verna Clay to the website!
Verna has graciously offered TWO copies of her newest novel, Roth Book One: Protector! Now read her interview to find out how to enter to win.
Felicia: I'd like to welcome guest blogger, Verna Clay, author of the series Shapeling Trilogy.
Verna: Thanks for inviting me to blog, Felicia. It's been awhile since I was here.
Felicia: It's great having you again. Since we live on opposite sides of the U.S. we stay in touch via email. I'm excited about your latest project, please tell us about it.
Verna: My latest endeavor is a trilogy that I am self-publishing. The series is entitled: Shapeling Trilogy and the three books are: Roth: Protector; Fawn: Master; David: Prince. I have completed the first two books and I expect the last one to be out in early 2012; perhaps sooner. Also, I must thank Elaina Lee (For the Muse Designs) for the beautiful covers. Each cover captures the story in a nutshell.
Felicia: You've been busy. What is the series about?
Verna: The series follows the lives of three shapelings. Unknown to humans, shapelings are sent on missions to assist creation toward the illusive goal of illumination (enlightenment), a state also sought by shapelings. Within shapeling society, there are three ranks: Protector, Master, and co-Princes. In book one, we meet Roth, an alpha male personality who is on a decisive mission that will either elevate him to Master status, or keep him a Protector. His mission is to protect Rainey Childress by posing as her primary bodyguard. Rainey is a spoiled heiress and brilliant scientist on the verge of an amazing discovery. Needless to say, the two of them create sparks. As I said, he's an alpha male. The fun begins when he meets his match in Rainey Childress.
As for the second book, Fawn: Master, I decided to incorporate my shapeling fantasy into a cowboy setting. I love cowboy romances, so creating widower Wade Spencer, owner of Dream Catcher Ranch, was a joy. I'm laughing because I never thought my cowboy would end up in a fantasy/paranormal romance. Happily, I think the plot works. In book one I introduced Fawn as another Protector. In book two, she has been elevated to Master status and is assigned her first Mission of Mastery, nanny to seven year old Zoe Spencer, the emotionally challenged child of Wade. Of course, Fawn doesn't want to have romantic feelings for a human male. I enjoyed describing her conflicting emotions. As in all my stories, there is a mystery to be solved. The mystery in book two surrounds Zoe and the voices she hears in her head.
Felicia: Please tell us more about how you select the locations for your stories.
Verna: I love to travel, but since it's not possible to visit the many exotic locations I write about, I travel from my armchair. I'm always searching secondhand stores and Costco for travel videos. In the evenings, I enjoy kicking down, grabbing a snack, and traveling to wonderful locations via my videos. Of course, a favorite place is Egypt, so that's the location I chose for book one (Roth). I've written other books using Egypt, but those have been at the Giza Plateau. In Roth's story, we're going to Bahariya Oasis. I chose an oasis because of its mystical aura. As for book two, I knew the setting had to be the Four Corners Region of the U.S., which is peppered with Anasazi ruins. Anasazi cliff dwellings are awesome and I created one on Wade's ranch in Fawn's story.
Felicia: Verna, thank you for visiting. Please give us the setup for this excerpt.
Verna: Felicia, it's been my pleasure to visit and I thank you for this opportunity to share. As for the excerpt, it's from Book One: Roth: Protector. In this scene, Rainey is trying unsuccessfully to get some sleep after meeting her new bodyguard.
Except:
Rainey punched her pillow yet again. She wanted to sleep, needed to sleep because of the workday ahead of her. She opened her eyes and sat up. Damn bodyguard. What was his name? Ross… Ron… Rat… Roth. Wolf… Beowolf. What the hell kind of name is that?
She walked to her window and pulled the drapes aside. Shifting clouds played with an almost full moon. Eerie shadows waltzed across the grounds of her father’s estate. Unexpectedly, the clouds cleared and the moon shone brilliant. Rainey gasped when a huge bird swooped from the sky and soared past her window, its magnificent wings agilely directing its body. She watched the creature until it disappeared in the direction of the woods.
I wish I could fly with you.
